Do we or do we not have renters in our Village?

This is addressing the Rental Department to which we Village owners subsidize. In our last Board meeting our general manager twice mentioned he didn’t know why rental numbers were down but guessed it was due to gas prices. Twice Director Steffensen said based on the number of renter wristbands sold to use our cement pond, the Village renter numbers were not down; they were just not going through our rental department.
This leads me and others to ask the following questions. Do we have a general manager on top of this department? Does he know and plan for the future situations and implement new policies for such? Are he and Aramark not being paid to run this Rental Department as if it were a business instead of a babysitting job? Should not our general manager be at least knowledgeable at the approximate number of renters entering our Village? Did we hear past excuses for 2005, 2006, and 2007?
Did not the majority of the 2006 Rental Program Committee determined our rental department should be closed until Director Burke explained her dubious findings to the board that showed our Village would lose twice as much money if this closing were to occur?
Does not our Declaration clearly state that our rental department is to have exclusive rights. Whose job was it to make certain this was adhering to?
To add, our Village was on KGBT 4 Action News twice yesterday. They interviewed a lady whose family’s 4th of July holiday was ruined solely from the actions of LIV’s rental department. Our management chose not to explain their side to channel 4, but instead told them to leave.
Do you wish to express yourself?

We have renters, not only through the rental department but also with individual owners renting their property. It's unfortunate that the renters don't follow the rules of the village even though they receive and sign for them when renting through the rental department. Most owners provide written expectations and/or agreements which contain the rules of LIV. It's just sad that people don't respect the property of others.

Valley woman left stranded
News KGBT 4 July 20th

• Valley woman left stranded

PORT ISABEL -- Fireworks and fun in the sun were the plans for the Champion family this 4th of July.

But those plans got cut short and Norma Champion blames it on a valley RV park. "It’s very disappointing to the children and a little costly," she said.

"We show up 10:30 in the evening, packed children, food everything ready to go and there's someone occupying the lot," Champion explained. She booked two lots weeks in advance, but found herself with no place to stay.

It happened at the Long Island Village in Port Isabel.

Just two days before the 4th, Norma says management called saying they made a mistake. The two lots she had reserved were double booked, so she would have just one RV lot to spent the holiday.

She decided to continue with her 4th of July plans at Long Island Village and take the solo lot.

But, on July 3rd as they arrived in their RV, the clerk told her the manager extended the person already parked in that lot for another month.

"They didn't even try to accommodate us or anything no an apology nothing,” said Champion.

So after packing up the entire family, they ended up coming home that night. Norma says they had no choice. "Its the 4th of July everything’s booked, RV lots, even the hotels were booked and then you're out of gas."

Action 4 News went tried getting answers from Long Island Village, but they refused to comment. In fact, they told us to leave their property. Now, Norma wants everyone to know about her experience with the RV park.

"We want it not to happen to another family, that's all, its very disappointing for the children,” Chapion said.

SAD SAD SAD!

As an owner/investor in LIV I must say I am appalled that a renter was treated so poorly by our employees they felt compelled to complain to a television station.
I certainly hope that our BOD will include customer service experience and "southern hospitality" on their requirement list for our next manager.

How much more disgrace do we have to endure with this GM,his team and his faithful followers(SGG).

The fact that there is no one with any brains running this park is now being broadcast on TV!

What next?

It's such an embarassment.

Maybe the hurricane season will end the problem once and for all.

It is unfortunate that this family was put out, but owners who have property in the rental pool need to keep the rental office updated on any blocked out time they have. I heard there was a situation where the owner had blocked out the month of June so the rental office booked dates in July only to find out the owner had allowed their renter to stay the month of July and did not tell the rental office. So here is a situation that puts egg on the face of the LIV rental office, but it was the owner's fault. That's not being responsible!

Interesting assortment of comments in view of the fact that the Sheriff was here post Hurricane to pour cold water on RENTERS and the GM has barred renters/renting, at least thru the rental office, until after Sept.1. In retrospect, as a guy who blew a bundle every year for Fireworks, I only shot them off over water, not over an R.V. park full of tinder-dry houses. Life goes on!!!

Since the pools are not operating and we're in a clean up mode, I'm glad they've barred renters coming in. I've heard there was a group of renters who stayed through Dolly and they were not very nice about the fact there was no power, water, and such, to the point that one of them threw a pingpong paddle through the snack machine in the Activity Center and they were trying to get into peoples homes to get food. I wish renters would be more respectful to our property and homes.

Why does the GM and Aramark get slapped and held accountable for the actions of Village Owners who cheat the rental system and rent directly? Or worse, Owners who rent thru the renal office and then directly as well. No one can control such behavior.
I would like to see some balance in the comments this blog chooses to post.

I so agree with you. Village owners who cheat the rental system are cheating the whole village. I also would like to see some balance in this blog. We saw LIV after Dolly and we ARE in the rental program. We hate to lose $$$, but they absolutely need the time to clean up and recover without renters there. We heard stories of renters jumping into the pool in sweaty golf clothes because they were hot after playing 18 and then giving attitude when told to get out. Blaming the GM for EVERYTHING is getting to be a little much!

Could you explain how we are owners are "cheating the rental system"? Doesn't "owner" mean we have the right to rent our place as we see fit? We bought it, maintain it, pay taxes and condo fees. The rental office charges 35%, has poor advertising, blacklists those who are not friends of the GM, unfriendly front office, and very poor cleaning service. Why would we use them?

Yes, it's because the Association's Declaration of Covenenants says that all rentals are to go through the Rental Office; so if owners are renting on their own, they are violating their own Association's Covenants - simple as that! Sorry, can't spell it out any simpler than that.

I agree the rental office is poorly managed and not worth using. It's time to close it or give a new manager a chance to change things. The actions of the GM to the Valley woman was atrocious! And to think of how horrible we sounded to the tv watchers--is this the kind of representation we want to be paying for?

Thank you for explaining my comment about cheating the rental system. Been away for awhile. I'm amazed that so many people are ignorant of the covenants, or just don't care. The 35% the rental office charges helps PAY THE BILLS. Could I get more renting on my own? Possibly. But that doesn't help our Village. If the covenants were followed there would be much more control over who is in our Village and our Village would have more money to work with. Silly me. Follow the rules? What a strange idea.
